Duties of Industrial Designer

A mass produced product has to have an aesthetic value to customers who intend to use it. Every product needs to go through the design phase to develop itself.  A product is designed by an industrial designer who designs products for mass production. An Industrial designer is expected to be artistic and creative because the client provides him with a rough idea and sometimes the client just provides him with words such as “We just want our product to be best.” However these words are the vaguest words anyone could provide because they do not describe the staff available, budget available or the direction to be sought. Here the designer has to use his intellect and determine the requirements of the client. Here are the duties that an Industrial designer has to follow:

1) Communicate with client to determine requirements.

2) Sketch ideas on paper or on the computer to provide a visual of the idea.

3) Use computer software to develop models of designs.

4) Create prototypes of designs

5) Examine materials to be used in the product

6) Determine production cost with help of cost management.

7) Work with other specialist like Engineers, accountants, manufacturers to evaluate whether design concepts fit within the budget or not.

8) Evaluate whether the product is safe or not.

9) Evaluation of the feasibility of the product.

10) Evaluate the appearance of the product to determine whether it is attractive to prospective consumers.

11) Present design and demonstrate prototypes to clients.

12) Research ways in which a particular product might be used and who will use it.
